DOODY’S BOOK REVIEW

REVIEWER’S EXPERT OPINION Anthony Shanks, MD (Washington University School of Medicine)
Descriptionternational obstetrician.
PurposeThe book introduces readers to recent advances particularly in ultrasound and how to apply them to common problems in obstetrics. The authors do a good job of achieving these objectives.
AudienceThe authors represent an international background with which I have limited familiarity. There is an in-depth history on the Donald School which international graduates may find interesting.
FeaturesThe table of contents is muddled and difficult to use to look up a specific chapter. Cleaning it up so that it can be covered on two pages would be helpful. Chapters themselves are clean and easy to read. One standout chapter, on cardiac imaging, does a great job of using figures and descriptions to convey the information. Earlier chapters seem abbreviated in comparison. This is a very pleasing book to look at and the material is easy to follow. Some chapters are awkwardly titled with terminology that could be changed “bad obstetric history” and “gross obese” are two examples.
AssessmentThis is a simple, easy-to-read manual with nice illustrations. It has an international feel to it, although U.S. residents may find it helpful.
